EASTER
Sunday, March 27th, 2005
Easter is a celebration of spring. Anything that symbolizes new life and joy is a symbol of Easter. Tulips, daffodils, rabbits, baby chickens. Adults hide colored eggs and pretend a magical rabbit, the Easter Bunny, brought the eggs and candy to good children. Children hunt the eggs and gather them in baskets. Jellybeans and chocolate eggs are also traditional. The Easter Rule says that Easter shall be celebrated on the first Sunday that happens after the first full moon on or after the vernal equinox, or first day of spring. Therefore, Easter must be celebrated on a Sunday between the dates of March 22 and April 25. Its date is tied to the lunar cycle.
Easter gets its name from the goddess Eastre, whose symbol is the rabbit. The eggs are ancient tradition, a symbol of rebirth. They were often wrapped in gold leaf or, if you were poor, colored brightly by boiling them with the leaves or petals of certain flowers.
Christians celebrate the resurrection (rebirth) of Jesus Christ at Easter.
